Kota Doria is the name of a light woven fabric made of tiny woven squares (khat) still handwoven on traditional pit looms in Kaithoon near Kota in Rajasthan and some of the surrounding villages. Kota Doria first originated in Mysore where the weavers who practiced this craft were known as ‘Masurias’. Subsequently, between the 17th and 18th century, the weavers were brought to Kota by Rao Kishore Singh who was a general in the Mughal Army during Shahjahan’s reign. At first, the design known as buti was small and regular but larger designs are now made according to fashion and taste.
