There is something quietly extraordinary about a fabric that has been woven the same way for centuries. Kota Doria — a GI-tagged handloom from Kota, Rajasthan — carries that legacy in every thread. Its defining feature is the khat, a small square check formed by the interlacing of cotton and silk threads. These tiny open squares are not just beautiful — they are functional, creating natural air pockets that make Kota Doria one of the most breathable fabrics in India. Wear it in the middle of May and you will understand why generations of women have never let it go.

What’s in Every Set

Each HolyThread Kota Doria suit is an unstitched 3-piece set — giving you the freedom to stitch it exactly the way you like, in the silhouette that suits you best.

  • Kurta fabric: 2.5 metres
  • Bottom fabric: 2.5 metres — works for salwar, palazzo, or straight pant
  • Dupatta: 2.5 metres with finished edges

Which Kota Doria is Right for You

  • Pure Cotton Kota Doria — the everyday hero. Light, crisp, and effortlessly cool for long summer days
  • Silk-Cotton Kota — a step up in sheen. Lovely for morning poojas, family functions, and daytime celebrations
  • Zari Kota — woven with golden zari threads for sangeet nights, festive gatherings, and occasions that deserve a little shimmer

How to Spot Genuine Handloom Kota Doria

Not all Kota Doria is created equal. Here is what to look for when buying authentic handloom:

  • The khat squares will be slightly uneven — that is the hand of the weaver, not a flaw
  • A genuine 3-piece set weighs between 150 and 200 grams. Anything heavier likely has synthetic blends
  • Hold the fabric up to light — you should see the khat grid clearly, like a fine mesh

Stitching Your Kota Doria Suit

Take your set to a trusted local tailor and let them work their magic. Cotton Kota needs no lining for most colours — the sheerness is part of its charm. For whites and very light pastels, a simple cotton lining on the kurta is enough. The dupatta is meant to be sheer, so leave it as is.

Wash & Care

  • Pure Cotton Kota: gentle machine wash in a laundry bag works perfectly
  • Silk-Cotton and Zari Kota: dry clean to keep the texture and zari intact
  • All our fabrics are pre-shrunk — you will see only 2 to 3 percent shrinkage at most

Common Questions

Is Kota Doria too sheer to wear?
It is slightly sheer by nature, which is what makes it so breathable. For darker colours, no lining is needed. For whites and pastels, a light cotton lining on the kurta is all it takes. The dupatta is designed to be sheer — that is its beauty.

How is Kota Doria different from Chanderi?
Kota Doria is defined by its khat weave and is the more breathable of the two — made for summer. Chanderi has a smoother, glossier finish with traditional motifs and sits slightly heavier. Both are beautiful; the occasion decides which one you reach for.

Do you offer stitching services?
We do not. HolyThread focuses entirely on providing premium unstitched fabric so that you get a fit that is truly yours. Every set includes 2.5 metres each for the kurta and bottom — enough for all sizes up to XL.

Will the fabric shrink after washing?
Our Kota Doria is pre-shrunk before it reaches you. Expect no more than 2 to 3 percent shrinkage, which is already accounted for in the 2.5 metre length.
